About This Site

Top Ham Radio Equipment publishes hands-on reviews, head-to-head comparisons and step-by-step guides for amateur radio operators. We cover dual-band handhelds, mobile transceivers, mobile antennas, antenna analyzers and shack power supplies, with an eye on gear that keeps working when the power or the cell network does not.

Radio Safety

You need an amateur radio license to transmit on ham bands. Listening is open to anyone, but keying up without a license, or on frequencies your license class does not cover, can bring fines from the FCC. Check your privileges before you transmit.

Keep antennas, masts and feed lines well clear of power lines. Never raise or adjust an antenna anywhere it could fall onto or touch an overhead line, and do not work on outdoor antennas during a thunderstorm. Ground and bond your station and use lightning arrestors on feed lines that come indoors.

Respect RF exposure limits. Keep transmitting antennas away from people and pets, keep handhelds a few inches from your face at higher power, and do not touch an antenna element while transmitting. Mobile antennas on a vehicle roof put the radiating element closer to passengers than a base antenna would.

Bench power supplies and batteries store a lot of energy. Use correctly rated wire and inline fuses on both leads, observe polarity, never short the output terminals, and keep lithium batteries away from heat and physical damage. Mount mobile radios so they cannot become a projectile in a crash, and do not operate a radio in a way that distracts you while driving.
